Arsene Wenger has concerns that Arsenal intended to offer winger Theo Walcott a new contract despite concerns that the England international may finally decide to leave the club.
After having been at Arsenal for almost a decade, Walcott is still facing a fight to play regularly as the central striker. Injuries have certainly not helped his career, as the 25-year-old has already overcome several career threatening injuries. Walcott may have signed a new contract only a couple of years ago, but it is set to expire in the summer of 2016. Once again, clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City are showing interest in the speedster.
Walcott has said time and time again that money is not the important problem in his contract. It is understood that the player is keen on playing regularly and in his preferred central striker role. Wenger, on the other hand, has seen the numerous injuries suffered by the player and says that he cannot guarantee him such a position in the team right now. This stalemate could see Walcott joined the list of players like Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri, and Cesc Fabregas, who had to be eventually sold because they were unable to agree a new contract with the club.
"The first contacts have been established with the embassy. We will see how that (negotiations) progresses politically.Walcott was difficult to convince (in 2013) and that is why it took us much time.We have a started very early with him, but it was slow progress - he is very quick on the pitch, but off the pitch not always. I always wanted to keep him and I still want to keep him now. I want him to stay and be a regular player and fight for his place, but no matter where you go if it is a big club you have to compete for your place,” said Wenger.
