Theo Walcott was an obvious absentee in the Southampton squad which won a dramatic Carabao Cup third round tie with Sheffield United to book a place in the fourth round. In the third round clash played on Tuesday night, the Saints needed penalty shootout to see off their Championship opposition.
Sheffield United took an early lead in the eighth minute through Republic of Ireland international centre back John Egan before Ibrahima Diallo restored parity for the Saints midway through the first half as the two teams went into the break on level terms. Southampton went ahead in the game for the first time thanks to young centre back Mohamed Salisu eight minutes into the second half and they held on to the advantage for 13 minutes before Ollie McBurnie scored a second Sheffield United around the midway point of the half. The two teams thereafter had to go through the stress of penalties for the only spot available in the fourth round and it was the Saints who emerged winners after a 4-3 win.
Theo Walcott missed the game through injury. As a matter of fact, he has missed the last three matches in all competitions due to a muscle injury. His last appearance was as a substitute in the 8-0 thumping of lower league opposition Newport County in the Carabao Cup second round away from home last month.
