The run started on the back of the defeat to league leaders Chelsea with ten men. The Saints had key midfielder James Ward-Prowse sent off for a challenge on Jorginho in the final 13 minutes of the game and that affected the outcome a great deal. Chelsea scored two goals after the red card to the England international to seal a 3-1 home win at the expense of their South Coast opponents.
The Chelsea game was played just before the October international break. In the first game after the aforementioned international break, Southampton picked up their first league win of the season with the 1-0 victory over visitors Leeds United thanks to the goal from Albanian international Armando Broja.
