Theo Walcott was on the Southampton bench for the entire duration of the Premier League clash with North London club Tottenham Hotspur at the St. Mary's Stadium on Tuesday. Theo Walcott was named on the substitutes’ bench at the start of the game and he was not subbed on throughout the game as his team battled to a 1-1 draw with their visitors.
Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl had given Theo Walcott a rare start when they took on hosts West Ham United at the Olympic Stadium on Boxing Day. He was given a start upfront alongside Chelsea loanee Armando Broja who's on loan with the Saints for this season having joined them from the Blues in the summer. Walcott was given 89 minutes before he was replaced by Scotland international Stuart Armstrong as Southampton recorded an impressive 3-2 away win over the Hammers.
Austrian tactician Hassenhuttl made a lot of changes to his starting XI for the Spurs game in comparison to the Hammers game and Theo Walcott was one of those who dropped out of the starting XI. The Saints made a bright start against Tottenham Hotspur but they were not rewarded until the 25th minute when James Ward-Prowse scored for the third game running to give Southampton the lead. The advantage lasted for just sixteen (16) minutes courtesy the rash challenge from young Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu.
Salisu brought down South Korean international Heung-Min Son in the box in the 39th minute and he was given a second yellow card for the challenge. Salisu was sent off and Spurs striker Harry Kane sent Southampton shot stopper Fraser Forster the wrong way from the resulting spot kick to restore parity for his team.
Southampton were able to hold on to the draw from the moment Salisu was sent off till the end of the game.
